Task Definition
Use the New York Times archives (ProQuest Historical Newspapers Database) to find a product ad published before 1980. Find an updated ad from a current print source —paper, not digital (it doesn't have to be the exact product, just similar). You’ll have an easier if there are people depicted with the product in the ads. Apply the critical framework for analyzing advertising from “Elements in Understanding Advertising” to each ad by analyzing in writing the product, package, pitch/persuasion, placement, and purchaser, according to the Considine article. Then write a comparison of the ads. Who is the target audience? How would today's audience react to the historical ad and vice versa? What changes do you see? How does this reflect our society?
