Research Strategies

You do not need to cite sources, other than letting your instructor know from where you chose your current print ad.

Tips in using the ProQuest Historical Newspaper (New York Times archives) database for finding historical print ads:

  1. Check “Display ad” on article types and uncheck other types
  2. Choose a decade—optional
  3. Enter a keyword such as Coca Cola—optional (when you do not enter a keyword, a dialog box appears—click OK and the articles will appear anyway)
  4. Click on links. You may want to view pagemap version (link at top) to see the entire page. You can also browse page by page.
  5. Printing must be done through the ProQuest print link. Otherwise you won’t get the entire ad or article.
