Research Strategies

A. Use the databases and library books available through the SAS library. Do not use the free Web unless you are accessing sites via netTrekker (see Resources).

B. Tips for using our databases:

  1. Access the database. Type in the name of the disease on which you are researching. Choosing a subject search will give you a more focused result.
  2. Look carefully at the results of the search. If you didn't get what you expected, try searching with the common name for your disease. For example: achondroplasia is dwarfism.
  3. Scrutinize the page of results and look for: ability to choose format (overview essay, reference, magazine articles, images, etc.) For this assignment, overview essays and reference is a good place to start.
  4. Look also at the number of articles that are returned. There may be more than one page of results.
  5. Print from the print feature in the database. They ALL have one. You'll get a cleaner copy and it will use less paper and toner. Try to take notes on your note taking form without printing. If you need to print, highlight answers to your questions and type the highlighted information on your note taking forms.

C. Note taking

  1. Use this form (click and Save to My Documents or desktop).
  2. Take notes and note your sources on the form.
  3. Use a new note taking form everytime you change questions or change sources. You'll have a lot of forms!
  4. All notes will be turned in with your paper, stapled together.

See Ms. Jansen for help on note taking or using the databases.
